EcoShrink delivered scaffold encapsulation for live façade and roof works at Wellington Barracks in Central London. A sealed, flame-retardant wrap helped control dust and overspray beside ceremonial routes while keeping a neat street elevation. The system cut weather-related stoppages and kept access practical for inspections and deliveries.

Summary (At a Glance)

🏛️ Client/Site: Wellington Barracks

📍 Location: London

🗓️ Programme: Live-site façade & roof works

🏙️ Exposure: Urban frontage • Ceremonial/public interface

📏 Area wrapped: 11,000m²

🔥 FR grade: Flame-retardant (certified)

Project Overview

The client needed the façade and roof zones at Wellington Barracks to be encapsulated so works could proceed safely next to ceremonial and public routes. Standard sheeting would not give the same level of dust and overspray control or presentation on such a sensitive front elevation.

EcoShrink supplied and installed FR, UV-stable 300 µm scaffold wrap, heatwelded into a continuous enclosure over approximately 11,000 m² of scaffold. The system balanced security, access and programme certainty while keeping the building looking tidy to the street.

Challenges on site

  • Ceremonial and public routes running directly alongside the scaffold

  • Requirement to control dust and overspray next to a high-profile elevation

  • Wind and rain exposure at height on an open urban frontage

  • Need to maintain a consistent, tidy street-facing appearance throughout works

  • Access to be kept practical for inspections, deliveries and day-to-day operations

 Our solution

EcoShrink designed a scaffold encapsulation approach that used FR, UVstable shrink wrap welded into a sealed skin over the access scaffold. The sequence followed the same four-step method we apply on complex live sites: scope and prep, wrap and weld, fire safety, and monitoring and compliance.

Scope & Prep

  • Logged utilities, fire egress routes and wayfinding around the work area

  • Issued RAMS and an agreed programme with mobilisation date

  • Agreed delivery and inspection routes and quiet hours with the site team

  • Set exclusion zones and pedestrian lines to separate works from public and ceremonial routes

Wrap & Weld

  • Installed EcoShrink 300 µm, flame-retardant, UV-stable scaffold wrap

  • Tensioned and heat-welded seams to form a continuous, sealed enclosure

  • Finished with tidy welds and shrinking for a clean, uniform street elevation

Fire Safety

  • FR grade verified with supporting certificates in line with site requirements

  • Hot-works permit in place for welding operations

  • Fire points and CO extinguishers positioned at stair towers, hoists and ₂ main access doors, and the site team briefed

Monitoring & Compliance

  • Service life noted for wraps expected to remain in place for more than six months

  • Periodic visual checks agreed with the client

  • Care and reseal guidance supplied, including a small reseal kit for minor repairs over the programme

Results

  • Sealed scaffold encapsulation created safer, cleaner work zones along a sensitive public and ceremonial interface

  • Reduced wind ingress and overspray, helping trades keep momentum in variable weather

  • Neat, consistent street elevation maintained for the duration of the works

  • Clearly marked pedestrian routes and exclusion zones supported site safety and wayfinding

  • Access for inspections and deliveries stayed practical through labelled doors, reducing rework and unnecessary sheet removals

FAQ

Why was scaffold encapsulation chosen at Wellington Barracks?

Encapsulation was selected to give tighter control of dust and overspray next to ceremonial and public routes than netting or loose sheeting could provide. A sealed, flame-retardant wrap also helped maintain a neat street elevation while live façade and roof works were in progress.

How did the scaffold wrap affect access for inspections and deliveries?

Access points were agreed during the planning phase and built into the encapsulation layout. Labelled doors and defined routes meant inspectors and delivery teams could move through the enclosure without constant cutting and re-sheeting, reducing disruption and rework.

What weather and programme benefits did the encapsulation provide?

By limiting wind ingress and protecting the scaffold from direct rain, the wrap reduced weather-related stoppages at height. This helped trades maintain momentum on the works and supported the agreed programme on a busy Central London site.
