EcoShrink delivered shrink wrap containment for blasting on the Cardiff Bay Barrage Bascule Bridges in Cardiff Bay. A sealed shrink wrap enclosure was installed around each bridge so blasting and repainting could take place in a busy waterfront setting, above water and public walkways, without dust, debris or overspray affecting visitors or the marina.

Project overview

Cardiff Bay is a busy waterfront destination, with popular boardwalks, viewing platforms and marina access routes. The three Bascule Bridges form part of the Cardiff Bay Barrage, controlling water levels while carrying regular pedestrian traffic across the structure. After years of exposure to coastal weather and mechanical movement, the steelwork required full blasting and repainting. EcoShrink was appointed to provide shrink wrap containment for blasting so the works could go ahead safely above water and public walkways, with minimal disruption to visitors and marina operations.

Challenges on site

Painting Containment Shrink Wrap

Cardiff Bay is a bustling waterfront destination, drawing both local residents and tourists to its scenic views, lively marina, and popular pedestrian routes. At the core of this vibrant area are three iconic Bascule Bridges forming part of the Cardiff Bay Barrage. These bridges not only regulate water levels in the bay but also accommodate regular foot traffic and marina access. Over time, exposure to coastal weather, mechanical stress, and continuous pedestrian use made comprehensive blasting and painting essential. This case study explores how EcoShrink employed industrial shrink wrap containment and integrated scaffolding design to execute a swift, safe, and efficient restoration—providing temporary containment solutions without compromising public walkways or visitor experience.

Challenges in Blasting and Painting Containment

Conducting industrial painting containment works in a high-traffic, coastal environment came with multiple hurdles. The constant sea breeze in Cardiff Bay introduced moisture and gusty winds, amplifying the risk of delays or subpar coating adhesion. Ensuring a controlled, weather-resistant environment was crucial for preventing corrosion and reducing the chance of overspray.

Encapsulating three Bascule Bridges added further complexity. Each bridge featured unique contours, moving parts, and mechanical components that demanded a meticulous approach to scaffold design, shrink wrap containment for blasting, and dust and debris containment shrink wrap. This setup had to safeguard operational elements while facilitating the contractor’s blasting and painting tasks.

Moreover, Cardiff Bay’s walkways and viewing platforms remained open and heavily frequented. Maintaining clear, safe pedestrian routes was paramount, as footfall included everyone from daily commuters to tourists. The temporary structure containment had to not only shield the public from debris but also merge inconspicuously into the picturesque surroundings, minimising disruptions during the restoration.

Our Shrink Wrap Containment Solution

EcoShrink combined tailored scaffold design with heavy-duty shrink wrap to create robust blasting enclosures around each bridge.

  1. Bespoke scaffold design: Assessed each Bascule Bridge to design a scaffold layout that followed its contours and moving components Positioned scaffold so that public walkways and marina access routes could stay open and safely segregated from the works Coordinated with the blasting and painting contractor so the scaffold would support access, equipment, media handling and waste routes.

  2. Heavy-duty shrink wrap installation Applied industrial-grade shrink wrap over the scaffold to form a continuous enclosure around each bridge span Used heat to shrink and tension the wrap, creating a tight, weather-resistant skin that could cope with coastal wind and spray Detailed seams, corners and junctions carefully to minimise gaps and movement in exposed conditions.

  3. Blasting & painting containment over water The sealed enclosures acted as blasting and painting containment, keeping dust, spent blast media and paint particles within the wrap Helped protect the surrounding water, walkways and neighbouring assets from contamination and overspray Created a more stable internal environment for coating application despite variable weather outside.

  4. Working around public routes Phased scaffold and wrap installation so the boardwalk, viewing points and access paths remained open and clearly separated from work areas Presented a neat, consistent external appearance that blended as well as possible into the waterfront setting during works

Benefits of Painting Containment Shrink Wrap

  1. Protective Enclosure Benefits: Weather Protection: The sealed wrap acted as an industrial surface protection shrink wrap, shielding both the workforce and the mechanical surfaces from salt-laden air and moisture. salt-laden air and moisture.

Debris Control: The blasting enclosure shrink wrap fully enclosed each work area, capturing all dust, paint particles, and blast media. This is particularly akin to shrink wrap solutions for lead paint removal containment, preventing environmental contamination. Efficient Work Environment: By regulating internal conditions, workers maintained higher productivity and consistent quality—a crucial advantage for cost-effective containment for demolition and painting.

Results

Each phase of blasting and painting was completed within approximately one week, despite the complex coastal setting Shrink wrap containment captured dust, blast media and overspray, supporting environmental protection over water and public areas Public walkways and marina access remained open, with minimal disruption to visitors and daily use of the Cardiff Bay Barrage Weather-resistant enclosures reduced the impact of sea breeze, moisture and wind on blasting and painting quality The refreshed Bascule Bridges were delivered with a durable, high-quality finish, preserving both performance and presentation in a landmark location.
